![]() The Carrizozo Land Partnership, a partnership between the BLM, private land owners and ranchers of this area, has arranged for public access to BLM lands in this area by a vehicle pass process. The volcanic field consists of two lava flows, the Broken Back flow and the Carrizozo lava flow, the second youngest in New Mexico. Public lands managed by the BLM between the Carrizozo Lava Flow and the White Sands Missile Range can only be reached by crossing private land. The Carrizozo volcanic field is a monogenetic volcanic field located in New Mexico, US. Information about the Rio Chama Wild and Scenic River Failure to have the required equipment will prevent the launch of the party. Fire pans and all other required equipment must be shown at the boat ramp during check-in. Groups can not be split up in an attempt to circumvent the maximum group size of 16. Please note that for a launch before of April 15 and after September 15, you must fill out and pay $5 per person (EXACT CHANGE or check) through the self-registration permit box. The BLM uses a lottery system to reserve weekend (Friday-Saturday) launch dates from April 15 through September 15 and uses to purchase and issue all permits between April 15 through September 15. Allen (1952) estimated, based on visual observation, that the flows are less than 1000 years old, and Weber (1964) estimated the age as 1500 yrs old. No carbon suitable for C-14 analysis has been found under the Carrizozo flows. Rio Chama Lottery Application for a Weekend Launch The apparently-young Carrizozo lava flows have proven very difficult to date. Differential Global Positioning System (DGPS) data of both flows have revealed new details about the relief and emplacement of these compound basaltic flows. This lava flow is believed to be one of the most recent lava flows in the continental United States, dating back 1,500 years. The Carrizozo and McCartys basaltic lava flows in central New Mexico are excellent sites to study the emplacement of long compound flow fields. The central part of the flow is narrow, whereas the lower part spreads. The lower flow is extends for the full 75 km length. Valley of Fires offers both camping and day use. The Bureau of Land Management maintains and manages the Valley of Fires Recreation area, which is located four miles west of Carrizozo, NM, on US Highway 380. Two distinct lava flows have been identified in the Carrizozo field (Renault, 1970). The lava flow is considered to be one of the youngest lava flows in the continental United States. Collaborative Action and Dispute Resolution The massive Carrizozo lava flow, which traveled 75 km down the Tularosa Basin of south-central New Mexico, is one of Earths longest known Holocene lava. The Carrizozo Lava Flow WSA is located in central New Mexico. The flow top of the lava is very well-preserved, and in some places even retains an iridescent appearance, typical of young lava flows.
